ELCA meet in Barcelona to consolidate the network

On August 30-31, eight clusters of excellence in lightweight materials and related technologies met in Barcelona as part of the European Lightweight Cluster Alliance (ELCA).

The first day of the meeting took place in the offices of Acció (Government of Catalonia), in which the status of the network was presented together with the presentation of the lightweight activities of three global companies: Karl Mayer, Rehau, and Menzolit. This was followed by an off-site visit to the International Additive Manufacturing (IAM) 3D Hub of Leitat.

The second day started with the presentation of scientific expertise from the Brno University of Technology (CZ) and the University of Science and Technology in Bydgoszcz (PL).

The rest of the sessions focused on the development of the network’s strategy, including the progress made of the six working groups that integrate the network: (1 – Material supply and development; 2 – Characterisation and modelling; 3 – Design and smart functions; 4 – Manufacturing; 5 – Assembly & joining; 6 – Scrap separation and recycling) and the upcoming projects that will be developed by the partners in order to address the challenges faced by lightweight materials and related technologies.

The event served for consolidating the network and strengthening the cooperation among partners by covering cross-cutting technologies in most of sectors of application.
