ELCA Internationalisation: Globalising European Lightweight Technologies for a Greener Future

ELCA INTERNATIONALISATION

Project dates: 2020 – 2022

Consortium: 5 ELCA members across Europe

Funding body: COSME

Project overview

The ELCA Internationalisation project was funded under the COSME programme and aimed to promote European lightweight solutions in transportation sectors by fostering collaboration between European industry clusters and developing a joint internationalisation strategy for markets such as the U.S., Japan, India, and Latin America.

Challenge: Why is the project needed?

Lightweighting provides a solution by reducing component weight, thus cutting emissions. Although Europe had made progress in lightweight research, its global impact remained scattered. ELCA plays  needed to unite European clusters, promote lightweight innovations, and enhance Europe’s global competitiveness in sustainable transport.

Project approach

The consortium identified lightweight opportunities, developed a joint marketing strategy, and established a common “Lightweight made in Europe” brand. They organised exploratory missions, formed international partnerships, and implemented a roadmap for internationalisation, ensuring visibility and cooperation in global markets.

Impact

  1. Identified business opportunities in foreign markets
  2. Expanded the brand of lightweight made in Europe internationally
  3. Developed a common internationalisation strategy of ELCA

Future Outlook: Long-term sustainability benefits

ELCA Internationalisation increased global use of lightweight technologies, reducing emissions and aligning with circular economy principles. By expanding into global markets and fostering international cooperation, the project contributed to a more sustainable transport industry, enhancing recycling and reducing CO2 emissions over the long term.
