Empowering SMEs for a Sustainable Future with Advanced Lightweight Technologies

AMULET: Advanced Materials & Manufacturing United for LightwEighT

Project dates: Sep 2021 – Nov 2024

Consortium: 13 partners across Europe

Funding body: Horizon 2020

Project overview

AMULET aims to exploit the innovation potential of SMEs through a cross-sectoral, funded knowledge exchange. The goal of AMULET is to create new value chains by fostering the penetration of advanced lightweight materials in different fields through cross-regional and cross-sectoral knowledge exchange in four sectors: automotive, aerospace and aeronautics, energy, and building.

Challenge: Why is the project needed?

Despite advancements in lightweight materials like polymer-based composites and light metal alloys, their full potential remains untapped, particularly by SMEs. AMULET is needed to help these enterprises overcome technical and commercial barriers to adopting advanced materials, which are essential for reducing emissions and improving efficiency in key sectors like automotive and aerospace.

Project approach

AMULET takes a cross-sectoral approach to fostering innovation by developing R&D demonstration projects targeting sector-specific challenges. SMEs will be supported with technical training and business coaching to help them reach TRL7 and accelerate the commercialisation of their lightweight material solutions. The project encourages knowledge sharing across regions and industries, creating new value chains.

Impact

The AMULET project has had a significant impact on advancing the competitiveness of European SMEs by fostering innovation in lightweight materials across sectors like automotive, aerospace, energy, and construction. Over the course of three years, 15 SME teams participated in a 15-month programme, each receiving up to 120,000 EUR in funding and technical support. The project enabled the development of pioneering solutions, including new 3D printing methods and durable materials, helping SMEs create personalised products and improve manufacturing processes. The project’s long-term impact includes improved global competitiveness of SMEs and advancements in Europe’s transition towards a lighter, decarbonised economy.
