Project overview
Lightweight EU is an Interreg Europe project that aims to strengthen and harmonise EU regional and national policies for lightweighting technologies, thereby supporting a more sustainable, competitive industrial future.
The project addresses a critical gap: while lightweight technologies offer major benefits in terms of emissions, energy use, and resource efficiency, policy support and uptake are uneven across Europe. Some countries (e.g. Germany, Austria, Sweden) have stronger strategies, while many regions—particularly in Southern or Eastern Europe—lack coherent frameworks.
Challenge: Why is the project needed?
Lightweighting is a key enabler for decarbonisation and resource efficiency. It cuts CO₂ emissions, reduces energy use, and supports circular economy goals. Yet, despite its promise, the pace of policy adoption varies greatly across Europe.
Many regions face limited awareness, fragmented governance, and underdeveloped stakeholder networks. Policy fragmentation, rather than technological barriers, remains the main obstacle to broader lightweighting adoption. Without coordinated learning and alignment, innovation stays siloed, and regions risk missing out on the economic and environmental benefits of this technology.
Project approach
Lightweight EU addresses these challenges through interregional learning, stakeholder engagement, and targeted policy improvement.
Partners will first develop Regional Lightweighting Factsheets to assess local strengths, gaps, and innovation potential. A series of study visits, workshops, and good practice exchanges will then help partners identify effective policy tools and transfer successful approaches between regions. Based on these insights, the project will support the adaptation and testing of improved policy instruments from funding schemes to regulatory incentives tailored to local needs. Continuous feedback and coordination between regional and interregional levels will ensure lasting impact.
The project’s Kick-off meeting in June 2025 set this process in motion, defining objectives, timelines, and early deliverables, and establishing a shared foundation for collaboration across Europe.
Impact
Through its collaborative approach, Lightweight EU seeks to build stronger regional policy capacity for lightweighting, reduce disparities between frontrunner and emerging regions, and promote industrial innovation aligned with EU sustainability goals.
By embedding lightweighting into regional policy frameworks, the project will help reduce emissions and resource use while supporting competitiveness in sectors such as mobility, construction, and manufacturing. It will also foster a European policy network capable of sustaining cooperation beyond the project’s lifetime.
Aligned with the European Green Deal, the Green Deal Industrial Plan, and the Critical Raw Materials Act, Lightweight EU contributes to Europe’s broader industrial and environmental transformation.
Future Outlook: Long-term sustainability benefits
In the coming years, the consortium will publish the Regional Lightweighting Factsheets, host stakeholder workshops, and identify transferable good practices. These activities will inform the design and pilot testing of improved policy measures across participating regions.
Beyond 2029, the project’s outcomes will continue through the established partnership, ensuring that lightweighting remains a strategic focus within Europe’s industrial policy landscape.
