ANEMOS: Next-Generation Manufacturing for European Wind

ANEMOS – Automated, Digital, and Circular Manufacturing Solutions for European Wind Infrastructure

Project dates: May 2026 – Oct 2029

Consortium: 11 partners across Europe

Funding body: HORIZON EUROPE

Project overview

ANEMOS is a Horizon Europe initiative focused on developing, validating, and scaling automated, digital, and circular manufacturing solutions for the wind energy sector. As Europe accelerates its transition toward renewable energy, component manufacturing faces growing international competition, supply chain bottlenecks, and resource constraints. ANEMOS bridges the gap between research and factory-floor deployment by delivering scalable robotics, additive manufacturing, and lightweighting processes to reinforce Europe’s clean-tech resilience.

Challenge: Why is the project needed?

European wind turbine manufacturers must produce larger, higher-efficiency components while drastically reducing capital costs, raw material waste, and life-cycle carbon footprints. Traditional production processes remain heavily labor-intensive and difficult to scale. Key market and industrial barriers include:

Fragmented Value Chains: Lack of integration between raw material providers, OEMs, and technology suppliers.

Scalability Hurdles: High deployment friction when translating high-TRL research into active factory environments.

Regulatory & Standardisation Gaps: Missing unified industry standards and policy frameworks for advanced automated production.

Workforce Transition: The need for ergonomics, safe human-robot collaboration, and targeted up-skilling in high-tech manufacturing.

Project approach

Working alongside a 11-partner consortium, the project transforms production lines by embedding advanced robotics, additive manufacturing, and digital circularity tools into the turbine manufacturing ecosystem.

Advanced Factory Automation: Deploying high-TRL robotics to automate complex, labor-intensive manufacturing steps, reducing cycle times and capital expenditure.

Circular & Lightweight Design: Integrating resource-efficient additive techniques and digital tracking tools to minimise raw material usage and lower life-cycle environmental impacts.

Human-Centric Workplaces: Reframing automation as a supportive layer that improves ergonomic safety and fosters workforce skill development.

Exploitation & Scale-Up: Driving market adoption, standardisation pathways, and regulatory support to ensure rapid commercial replication across Europe post-project.

Impact

By combining industrial performance goals with strategic market exploitation, ANEMOS establishes a stronger, more competitive foundation for European clean-tech production. The project unites 11 partners across 6 countries to build an integrated manufacturing value chain, demonstrating high-TRL robotics and additive manufacturing solutions that streamline production, reduce cycle times, and lower capital costs for wind turbine components. Beyond factory-floor productivity, ANEMOS drives circularity by integrating digital tools and resource-efficient manufacturing techniques to minimise raw material waste and lower the life-cycle carbon footprint of European wind infrastructure.

Crucially, this transformation prioritises human-centric automation that elevates worker safety and supports workforce upskilling, while translating technical demonstrators into actionable exploitation pathways, policy insights, and standardisation frameworks that enable rapid, post-project commercial scale-up across Europe.
