The EU has set CO2 emissions targets for the road transport sector, to counter the growing vehicle pollution contributing to climate change. To cut down emissions and fuel consumption, reducing vehicle weight is one of the most robust ways forward.

Composites provide the highest potential for reducing weight, but are encountering bottlenecks for their mass adoption by the automotive sector. Currently, several clusters of excellence are working on lightweighting around Europe, performing state-of-the-art research. Yet, communication and coordination between them is unstructured and limited.
